渡辺俊美さんのスタイルといえば、ジャケットにハット、アイウェアを連想させるが、Jプレスの新作も彼の長年着てきた私服のように見事にマッチした。
「Jプレスは、私の中ではアメリカとイギリスの中間辺り。それを少し日本寄りにしたイメージがありますね。18歳の頃、東京に出てきて最初に買ったシャツがJプレスのダンガリーシャツでした。正装としてではなく、普段からカジュアルに着たくて。ファッションに目覚め始めた頃からJプレスが私の周りにいたんですよ。今でもアメリカントラッドの代表ブランドとして、その定番を着崩すという考えで捉えていますね。」

では、今体現したいファッションとは何か。
「時代とは全然そぐわないけど、自分が一番好きなのは40’sの洋服なんですよ。でも、自分の周りの風景とは程遠い感じもするので、なかなか難しい気がしますけどね。最近はきちんとトラッドなものを着こなしたくて、一つずつまた探し集めているところです。例えば、子供の授業参観なんかにはビシッと決めていきたいと思いますよ。お父さんというより、カッコいいおじいちゃんだと思われるようになりたい。それが目標ですね。」

そんな渡辺さんは今、自身が所属するバンド TOKYO No.1 SOUL SET の制作期間にある。
「リリースするのはまだ先なんですが、すでに衣装をどうするかを考えているんですよ。紺ブレにホワイトジーンズ、カンカン帽だったり。スタイル・カウンシルみたいな感じを連想していて。そこにバンドのエンブレムを刺繍してカスタムしたいな、なんて考えているんですよ。服からも音楽が出るものですからね。古き良き、不良オジさんが聴いていた音楽をやりたいな、と。」

この日、撮影したのは渡辺さんが通う美容室 LUZ HAIR。

When it comes to Toshimi Watanabe's signature style, a jacket, hat, and eyewear immediately come to mind. J. Press’s new collection blended seamlessly with his long-time personal wardrobe.
"For me, J. Press sits somewhere between American and British fashion, with a slight Japanese influence. When I first moved to Tokyo at 18, the very first shirt I bought was a J. Press chambray shirt. I didn’t want to wear it as formal attire but rather as casual everyday wear. Ever since I started developing an interest in fashion, J. Press has always been around me. Even now, I see it as a representative brand of American traditional style, which I like to wear in a more relaxed and unconventional way."

So, what kind of fashion does he want to embody now?
"It might not align with today’s trends at all, but my favorite era for clothing is the 1940s. However, that style feels quite distant from the world around me, so it’s a bit tricky to pull off. Lately, I’ve been trying to wear traditional styles properly again, carefully selecting and collecting pieces one by one. For example, when attending my child’s school events, I want to dress sharply. Rather than being seen as just a dad, I want to be thought of as a stylish grandpa. That’s my goal."

Currently, Watanabe is in the process of producing new music with his band, TOKYO No.1 SOUL SET.
"The release is still a little way off, but I’m already thinking about what to wear. A navy blazer, white jeans, maybe a boater hat—I have an image in mind similar to The Style Council. I’m even thinking of customizing it with an embroidered band emblem. Music and fashion go hand in hand. I want to create music reminiscent of the good old days, the kind of music that stylish rebels used to listen to."
